Quenching The Fire : A Firefighters Quest for the Perfect Beer

This was supposed to be the article about bottling. I’m still working on that. You still have time to bottle, trust me. Truth be told I have been extremely busy as of late. Wife, kids, fire season and there is no order to that. Sometimes I don’t know which way I’m coming or going but I always seem to end up at the fire house. It is like ‘Groundhog Day’ except my job is much cooler and I’d probably slap the shit out of Chris Elliot if I ever saw him in real life ( I just don’t like the guy).

Sure I have been drinking plenty of fine craft beers (and ciders) but if all I did were reviews you would get bored and fast. There are other sites for that sort of thing , heck we even have one in our forums here. (hint hint go check out the forums).

Today we do something different.

I want to know what your most memorable beer of the summer was. It can be any beer. It can be any moment. I’m leaving it up to you to write the article this week.

Hey, its not like I’m getting paid to write this thing ( hint hint we need beer sponsors hint hint give me free beer).

What say you, oh kings and queens of the interwebs, what was your moment this summer?

No replies yet? Very well, I’ll help. It’s been a memorable summer since I’ve moved from KS to the Big D. We have access to most everything that was available up there, along with a few coastal beers that haven’t made it up there yet. Brooklyn, Green Flash, Dogfish Head and Stone among others. Dallas is also the home base of Flying Saucer and their new concept, The Meddlesome Moth. Haven’t been to The Moth yet and have only hit up one of the three Saucers close by, but I’ll get to that soon enough.

The high point of this very memorable summer was my first taste of Surly Furious, CynicAle and Coffee Bender while in MN for Independence Day. So fizzy and enjoyable, I’m not sure I can pick a favorite. I polished off a 4 pack of Coffee Bender at 10am while watching the 4th of July Parade. That’s what America is all about! Also got to hit up Bell’s Oberon and Two Hearted (both on tap) while I was there, very nice beers that I also wish there were available down here in the Big D. I’ll be in IA in a couple of weeks. I see Surly has a distributor there and hopefully I can find a store that sells it. Since the beer will be warm, (stupid Iowa liquor laws) I won’t feel as bad about bootlegging it down south in the trunk.

Another moment was at The Saucer on Saturday (hey, it’s still summer!) when I tried the Brooklyn Octoberfest. That Malt/Carmel smell and taste are a nice surprise, and I really enjoyed savoring the entire glass. I can see myself enjoying a few of these this fall at The Saucer or at home if I can find some at the store.

Finally, just today I laid my hands on some Lagunita’s Lil’ Sumpin’ Sumpin’ per Bull E. Vard’s recommendation. My normal beer store has been ordering it for weeks with no luck, but I happened upon some at Whole Foods. It’s chilling in the fridge as I write this. Can’t wait to pop a couple tonight for what might be the last great beer moment of the summer. Oh well, it’s looking like a great fall, too! Cheers!
